850R - P0133 - O2 Sensor Issues

Post by kiteoregon »

I get a CEL for about 2 minutes every time the car is started. I checked the code and it's a P0133 (Sensor 1 Bank 1 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response). The code always goes away after about 2 minutes of operation. I figured i would just replace the front O2, i ordered a Bosch 15097 and installed the new O2 sensor in the front position. I was surprised to see that i still had the CEL after start. I cleared the code and drove for a bit. As soon as i cycled the power i got the CEL again.

I figured maybe it would clear after driving for a bit, well after all weekend still no luck. I was working on the stereo and had the battery disconnected for the better part of 4 hours, asn still the error when starting.

I also notice that my gas mileage is probably a bit on the low side, not sure what it was before as the car is new to me.

What should i look at next, I hate the CEL in my mint 850R, makes me feel broken.

This is in a 1996 850R.

Hi kiteoregon,

The below info is courtesy of Alldata Inc....

Hopefully it will help you out...

Condition
Probe monitoring begins after probe preheating diagnostics are complete. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) ECM-280A is stored if there is a fault in the front Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) or its wiring causing the signal to deviate from its permitted range

The control module registers four different types of fault:

•Signal too high The control module compares the front and rear adaptation values. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored when the values deviate by more than 3%.
NOTE: The fault may be in the front or rear Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) circuit.

•Signal too low The control module monitors the aging of the probe by checking its dynamics when switching between lean and rich mixtures. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored if the control module registers that the probe is operating too slowly.
•Signal missing The control module monitors cross-induction from the probe preheating. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored when cross induction exceeds the permitted value.
•Faulty signal A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) stored when:
•the control module registers that the signal from the front probe is above 4.8 V for too long
•the signal from the front probe does not deviate from [lambda] = 1
•the signal from the front probe is showing a lean fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a rich mixture
•the signal from the front probe is showing a rich fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a lean mixture.
Condition

•The rear Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) control is disabled
•Three-way catalytic converter (TWC) diagnostic is disabled
Possible source

Signal too high:

•air leakage in the exhaust system
•short-circuit to power supply or ground in the signal cable (+) or supply cable for pump current
•defective Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
Signal too low:

•the cable for calibration current and the cable for pump current are short-circuited to each other
•open-circuit in signal cable (-)
•open-circuit in cable for calibration current
•defective Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S).
Signal missing:

•signal cable (+) and signal cable (-) short-circuited to each other
•one of the cables for Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) preheating is short-circuited to the probe's other wiring
•defective Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S).
Faulty signal:

•short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in signal cable (+)
•short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in signal cable (-)
•short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in pump current cable
•short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in calibration current cable
•open-circuit in signal cable (+)
•defective Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S).
Condition

•Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lit.

Are you sure you're not talking about the service light that comes on after start and goes off after 2 minutes?

rspi, i am new to the car, but i think that is exactly what i am talking about. What is the service light about? It's on for exactly 2.5 minutes every start.

Could that be the indicator that comes on after x miles that tells us to take the car in for service? If thats the case, why would my scanner still puke the P0133 code?

Google for the p0133 volvo. I think you should replace the rear O2 sensor also. The service engine soon light is the time to change oil light. On my 98 V70 only a tool will reset it. That might be the case with your car too. It can be safely ignored. I am reminded to glance at a piece of paper that tells me when to change the oil again. Annoying but completely harmless and operating like it should.

Thats a good call, i will replace the rear O2 as well, then use some software on my laptop and clear the service engine light.

You can disconnect the battery, touch the + and - to each other for a sec, pump on the brake pedal a few times to drain any residual capacitor type charge. Connect everything up, turn the ignition all the way on without starting the motor and scan, should get "no codes" and continue from there. I use a really cheap crap scanner and this is how I verify I cleared everything before starting another hopeless cycle of seeing which CEL comes next.
