1996 850 NA Replace Front Oxygen Sensor P0133

Post by PeteB »

Got the P0133 code, along with louder exhaust, some say that an exhaust leak can set this code.
Odd, the loud exhaust issue went away since the first time that I looked at it about a month ago,
cleared the code, guessing that it will come back.

Robert DIY shows how to do it here, he uses a slotted O2 sensor socket:

Had the car up on ramps so shot the front O2 sensor with PBlaster and WD40, let it soak in.
I have an O2 socket that is similar to the one that Robert uses but it is Autocraft brand and looks
more like cast iron than steel. It says 7/8" (22mm) on it. It went on all the way, and then when I
used a braker bar on it, it slipped and turned. I seem to remember clamping it tighter with vice
grips the last time that I used it in a spot with enough room. There's not enough room here.
OK, so the nut surface is slightly rounded now. I guess that the thing to do is to get a better
socket and try again. I suppose that a last resort would be to use vice grips on it.

It looks like the Autocraft socket just opened up a bit, I'd avoid this brand in the future.

Suggestions? I could try heat of course but we only have a propane torch.

Got a close look at it and it seems that the socket expanded and didn't damage the nut much at all.
I ordered a hopefully better socket and will give it a try with heat.
I do have an open end wrench that held tight but was unable to break it - the new socket is probably
a better bet.

It takes the PBlaster well, looks like it gets sucked right into the threads, but of course has not freed it.

I had the same problem a while back. The tool is not sturdy enough and finally just opens up and spin. Think I just bought a new one from Autozone. Worked like a charm.

I’ve got a couple of these tools if you want to meet on Route 8 somewhere and borrow.

I want to say my black oxide complete 22mm with a breaker bar is the best one I have for this job

I bought a Tekton socket last year in January (2021), and that worked great -- did not open up or spread noticeably while removing the old O2 sensor. It was a TEKTON 3/8 Inch Drive x 7/8 Inch Offset 6-Point Oxygen Sensor Socket, part number 47749. Only cost $8 at that time, now $11 in Oct 2022.

I've used a hose clamp on O2 sensor tools, to help keep them from spreading apart for really stubborn sensors.

Thanks, I have another socket on the way, and will try the heat first then this socket and will let you know if I need to borrow one.

Thanks again.
I have some doors for you by the way, do you still have space to store them?

Went to buy the O2 sensor from FCP and this one is listed as the correct one:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -v70-15097

The plug doesn't look like the one that Robert disconnected in his video above.

I noticed that FCP offers an extension cable that DOES look like the plug that Robert worked on:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 14#fitment
Now I just noticed that it says that this fits 1997 850s but ours is a 1996.

The question is if the O2 sensor linked above will fit as is or will some sort of adapter be needed?
I've not gotten the old one out so I don't know what it looks like.

Anyone?
