01 v70 ac clutch gap on car adjust(yes it can be done)

Post by DBULL »

After putting it off for the past three months I finally caught a break from the heat wave in mid Tennessee last night. My 01 v70 had the all too common excessive clutch gap and after looking at all the patch cures I decided to do it right.I jacked the front of the car until I could fit jackstands on the frame behind the front wheels, removed the right front wheel, unbolted the fender sheild and tied it back.I screwed an m5-.80x25 bolt into one off the holes in the clutch to lock my 10mm short socket with a screwdiver in order to break the clutch retaining bolt loose. This bolt spun out with my fingers once broken loose.I then found a large heavy washer and with a center punch marked my first hole of three.I then set my calipers to 33mm and marked my second hole with the punch.I used my calipers to scribe my third hole by placing the point used for inner measurements in the first punch mark and scribing with the other point(made a small line) and then from the second hole and center-punched where the lines crossed. After drilling my holes for the m5 bolts,I epoxied a smaller washer to my homemade puller to fill in the center hole.I then started one of the m5 bolts through the puller and into the clutch.Next I screwed an m6-1.00x35 bolt into the compressor where the original retaining bolt had been(fingertight) and added the other two m5 bolts to the puller. The three bolts were then tightened evenly(8mm wrench/I used a 5/16 ratchet wrench)until the clutch released to where it was movable by hand, removed the m5 bolts and center bolt, placed paper under clutch to catch the shims and removed clutch assembly.DON'T forget to measure the air gap before you start this project.Mine was 1.00mm and after removing .030" shim it was .35mm.This was a slow and tedious project but was well worth the effort as I now have relief from the heat from the weather and the heat from my wife. Thanks DBULL
