1994 850 Turbo AC inoperative MVSOLVED Clutch gap problem

Post by csbrianp »

I own a 94 850 turbo where the AC will not cool above 2000 RPM's. While idling the AC is cold and will cycle once in a while the gauge shows levels are good. It works fine as long as I keep the RPMs below 2000 which is real hard. Once I over the 2000 RPMs the compressor will not kick in until the car is restarted.
I thought it must be the high pressure switch and have swapped it out. A mechanic told be to change the cycle switch but I don't know where to look.

My neighbor has an 02 V70 that is doing the same thing, only difference is theirs doesn't show a pattern and some days the AC works all day.

Any suggestions.

Brian

That sounds like classic compressor gap problem. It can be fixed by reshimming (for purists) or by the googable "Volvo AC bread clip fix"

I should point out that, if I race it off the line then let off the AC will stay on, it only happens if I drive continually faster than 2000 RPMs. Also, I can turn the AC off and after a few moments it will kick back on but that only happens once in a while.

The compressor will not kick in unless car is restarted.
