XC90 2003 Hood Release Latch broken

Post by lisafrye »

My hood release latch is broken and I am waiting for the dealer to get parts in. This morning I started my car and Warning light came on saying "Coolant low.Stop engine". Can anyone tell me how to locate my hood release cables to open hood and add coolant? If I remember right it was the passenger side that came unclamped, but I would like to know where both sides are located. Any help?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The catches are behind the headlights' inner edges.

The cable comes in to the driver's side latch on that side of the car. It then goes across the front of the car to the passenger side.

seems odd they would put the catches at the front end of the car when the hatch is at the back!
will try the tip and report back on our success!!

Lisa you will not be able to find the cable going to that passenger side release latch. It is hidden on top of the radiator and runs across the front of the car. You have to lower the radiator to get access to that cable. It is an expensive repair, I believe it takes close to 4 hours of labor to install a new cable.

Where is the cable. i have the spent the last hours looking for the cable and trying play with the latch under the grill without forcing it.. I can't i identify the cable to pull? It looks like if i get the head light assembly out i should be able to get to it. Assistance please..

I solved the problem of the safety latch release. Afetr reviewing a few websites including this one was was most helpful. Use a long flat piece of metal about 1 inch wide insert between hood and car above light bulb. You will most likely need a flashlight. Push the latch hook down which is actually holding the hood.
I know this sounds easy and it is after about two hours of playing around with it.

Hi All, I have a 2005 XC90 and my hood release handle inside the car will not release the hood. I just had the AC serviced and the hood was working properly when I dropped it off - but not anymore!? I just noticed that the passenger side of the hood seems to be unlatched (I can pull it up slightly so know it is not latched) - but not the drivers side? When I pull the release handle inside the car I get no click, just steady pressure all the way until I can;t pull it anymore. I am not sure how to release the hood now and it is stuck shut. Kind of screwed here, and can't really prove that the shop caused this issue, just seems a strange coincidence? Appreciate any guidance.

Some else asked this question last August, see link for photos of the passenger side- https://photos.app.goo.gl/eRqyqF4G3X8CYfFU8

Driver's side is identical.
