Inside heater problem (fan issue)

Post by Haakon »

Hi,

I`ve purchased a used volvo v70 with a few issues and I hope to get help to sort this out. I dont think the heating system is working as it supposed to do. The fan is spinning around, but it does not push any air trough the vents. I have been looking for the coupe filter without finding any, but on the passenger side in the engine bay, I think there is a place to but the filter in, but not certain. under the glow compartment it seems to me that is just the fan. I dont think the missing filter is the problem.

When I take the handle for directing the heat in difference direction, at 90 degrees, the ac light comes on and wont come of, before I take the handle one notch to another direction, then I can shut the ac off and choose different settings, but I cannot get the fan blow out of the vents. any idea whats wrong here? I have to get it sorted before winter.. any help appreciated ;)

Have you tried turning the temp knobs to full cold? (all the way to the left as far as will go).

I am assuming there is air blowing out on floor and through defrost.

I have tried this, but no air comes out of either defroster, or to my feets. I think this is strange.. or is the open and closing of the damper electronic controlled?

I have read something about coupe and fan temperatur sensor (evaporator temp sensor), can these cause such symtomps?

Look in your manual and determine if you have manual ...MCC ...or electronic ECC climate control

Troubleshooting is different for each

it is a station wagon, and I assume I have EEC, cause I can set the fan and the damper on "auto". I have also located the fault. It is the passenger side damper motor that is faulty, the one that is located beside the main fan on left upper side, but I cannot figure out how to get it out for examination :( . it is connected to the damper with a white plastic rod . anyone who has done this job?

I have to correct my self.. I think I have found the problem. as seen on the picture below, the damper motor wiith the white connection rod is not moving in any settings

and when I gently pull push the rod, I hear a sound that i think may be that it is about to open the damper (I can only pull\push it about 1-2mm, before it stopps in the gears of the damper motor.

I have this kind of heater:

Also, the fan is not working in auto mode..

any ideas?

Ok Haakon.

That's is an Electronic Climate Control system (ECC)

The passenger side damper you wrote about controls the source of the air flow ..either external fresh air or internal recirculated air.

When you set the ECC middle knob the defrost position (straight up and down) the AC is automatically turned on and the blower should go on high, and air should go to the windshield. It takes 3-5 seconds for these dampers to change. Pushing the AC on/off buttons while the defrost is selected will have no effect - that's normal and correct operation. This position is 90 degrees turned for the AUTO position on the control knob.

First test. After starting the car, watch the green LEDs for the AC and recirc button. Do they flash for about 20 seconds?

The fan speed is used by the ECC to regulate temperature in both heating and cooling modes, so it is not unusual for there to be no flow in AUTO mode

The cabin air filter is located under the plastic cowl cover that is below the windshield wiper arms. There are 6 or so torx head screws that hold it in place but you only need to remove two of them and the drain hose to get to the filter.

My daughter's filter was so clogged up that it moved little if any air and with your bum recirc damper the only source of air may be the outside air.

This is for an 850 but it is all the same in a pre-2001 70 series car. You should have the frame already.

Installing 850 cabin air filter

first thing first, when I start the car, the heater leds do not flash, they are just illuminating green, or red, depends on the ac is on or off, so I guess this is a good start?

I have tested the heater properly, and It was much easier when you described how it was supposed to work:)

When I set the fan on auto mode, and the knob to full defrost, the fan will start at high revs and I could feel a slight breeze coming from the vents at the front window and the air ducts towards drivers and passenger door windows. In this position, I can only select degrees.

When I turn the ac off (one notch or more from defrost) I can choose all other settings, but it is just comming a slight breeze from the air ducts in these settings aswell :(

I have notice one thing that I am missing cabin filter and the black plastic thing that holds the filter, can this be the problem? I mean, the air flow does not got enought resistance to blow the right way, and blows into the engine compartment instead?

I`m missing the black box as seen here: to me it seems that its just push and pull to insert and take it off.
