Hello-
I have a 2005 S80 2.5T with 80,000 miles on it. This summer in Ohio (hot and humid) it has been running very rough, stalling, lots of CEL lights, engine service required, etc...
June 10
We took it to our local indie mechanic who cleaned the throttle, changed spark plugs and the problem went away for a few days ($900).
June 14
The car started behaving the same way and took it to the original dealer. They replaced the throttle completely ($800). Car worked for 48 hours and then started stalling, rough idle, etc..
June 21
Returned to the dealer and they diagnosed the problem as a loose vacuum clamp. Drove fine for a week.
June 29
Took a trip to Virginia. After a rain storm where the car sat in a parking garage overnight, CEL, reduced engine performance. Drove the car to the local dealer and they diagnosed the problem as the throttle pins not connecting properly and might need to be replaced. The Virginia dealer felt the throttle did not need to be replaced and it is entirely a pin connection problem. Virginia dealer cleaned the connection pins and it ran fine.
July 7
Back in Ohio after a big rainstorm, the problem has returned, rough idle, CEL and stalling.
So far we have spend $1700 and not fixed the problem.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? I have seen similar posts regarding XC90s - could it be a humidity/weather issue?
Thanks in advance for any ideas-

Some codes would be helpful. It sounds almost identical to a problem I've been chasing on a 2004 XC70 using the same throttle. Fortunately I believe the problem is now gone after removal of the ECM (engine control module) and cleaning of all pins with electrical contact cleaner.
Has the MAF sensor been replaced?
The codes will reveal far more than an educated guess. In the above case there was a ECM code reporting faulty software though it had been reloaded.

I think the codes are - ECM -9210/9220/961C, ECM -314D/315D/120C. The CEL light is on now - so I will post the codes when it goes back to the dealer on Wednesday. The XC70 and this car share an engine right? The MAF has not been replaced yet. Is the problem mechanical like a bad throttle or MAF? I am guessing that it is not throttle related since a brand new throttle caused the same problem, could it be as simple as bad contact with the pins which are causing it to manifest as a mechanical problem?

Same engine as yours. The XC70 also had the throttle and MAF replaced. The car had done 220,000 miles and was from an area abounding with unsealed roads (lots of dust)
I'll check with my own scan records and get back to you the 315D looks familiar.

This is the list of codes. I was able to remove all of them (except the AUM audio module code) by cleaning the ECM connector. It's been 3 weeks now and I haven't heard from the customer.

The common denominator is that whenever someone (you, indie, dealer) is near the pins on the ETB you get a driveable car that shortly thereafter develops the same issue. I think this speaks to a simple connector problem that needs to be resolved.
Once the reliability of the electronics is compromised, the codes are of limited utility IMHO. Rough running will cause all sorts of codes to be thrown - none of which may be relevant.
My saga of chasing multiple codes all due to one loose hose is on the P1 Forum.
