This is my wife's 2001 XC70 with 110,000 miles on it.
Problem on hand:
While drive (only 10 minutes), dash lightS n gauges all went out, power window, lock, sunroof out also, but engine, headlight, n radio still worked. Popped the following warning light; check engine, ABS. This happened twice within
Leading to this problem, I documented the following electrical issues for a few months:
-Blower motor running at full speed when I first enter the car after it sat all night in my driveway.
-Using the windshield fluid function made the rear speakers produced static sounds, but stop as soon as I let go of the washer fluid lever.
-Driver heated seat motor failed twice and left unfixed after second time.
-Power window both driver side and passenger would roll up with one touch, but come right back down by itself as though its hitting something.
-Note, the above happened here and there, never at the same time. We have own this Volvo for just 1 year. Otherwise love this car.
Need new CEM or something small or sell now?

Start with checking your battery cables for proper connection. I have seen these same symptoms but with the vehicle stalling with a loose positive terminal. Also have the charging system checked your battery could be shorted and still allow the vehicle to start. The windows just lost their initialization and can be reset. The radio static is just interference. All of your symptoms lead to sudden power loss or surges. The ignition switches/tumblers have been known to wear out and cause dash lights but the blower motor running points to low power supply.

I checked all the fuses, under hood, driver side and in trunk, all seem fine.
Battery connection is clean and good.
Any way to tell if it's the battery vs the alternator? It only happens sometimes and I figure out the pattern when it would happen. As often as 2-3 times a days (first thing in the morning, right when I get out of work, and random time), then it runs fine for days and even 2-3weeks.

Also, what are the chance that it actually needs a new CEM?
The dealer could not replicate the problem so they reset all the codes and asked me to bring it back for further testing. When I brought it back they still could not replicate it and could not pinpoint to anything so they suggested replacing the CEM for $1300. Its one thing if they know for sure that is the problem, but I get the feeling that they are just guessing.

The chances that you need a new unit are high, but not a CEM, but a new DIM(instrument cluster).macplee wrote:Also, what are the chance that it actually needs a new CEM?
DIM failures are common in the early P2 volvos and can cause havoc like you are describing. Do a search on DIM failures.
if it IS the DIM I fixed my issues for around 200
you can easily send out your cluster to get repaired for under $200. I just did it. Go to Ebay and lookup seller euro-electric. They give you easy instructions on how to pop out your panel, mail it to them and they ship it back fixed 1 2 3. Dont do like I did and wait for years and trying everything under the sun.
There are other sellers that seem more expensive out there.
or can search.
"VOLVO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPAIR". If you dont want to use ebay
you can just call them. 866 281 2414.
No I dont work there i just used their service and boy I wish i knew about it earlier

I am having almost the exact problem! I also suspected the DIM and the CEM. My question is why or how would the DIM cause problems with the window controls? Replacing the CEM sounds like a real expensive problem. I have an OBDII and I only get emission codes. Were you getting additional codes?

Bartlett S60, You'd better post everything in details about your issue. Your car is different.

If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer
