Post by Ozark Lee »

In theory the 70 series never should fail since it has no gears, it is all electronic. The data is also skewed by Yazaki instrument clusters that don't seem to fail either. The lions share of mechanical clusters out there are the VDO version and they do eventually all fail and it isn't limited to Volvos. I had a VDO cluster on a Porsche that had bad gears as well. It is more of a VDO problem than it is a Volvo problem but they are the ones that chose the OEM vendor.

Another factor that skews the results is that most of us aren't the original owners of the car and the previous owner may have changed the gears out before it came to the current member. If I didn't tell someone that bought one of my cars they would never know. The aftermarket gears, at least the ones from Odometergears.com, will likely outlast the car. I never have heard of one of Jeff's gears failing if both gears got changed.

why is it reasonable to ignore the more than 1/3 of the odo gears in the survey
I just the data points in the poll chart for the analysis.

The 18 "have not failed" dont have miles attributed, so I cant use them here, unless I assume they failed at the MTBF and then add them in.....

Right, that's what I posted, but without the acronyms ... At least that would account for them all, and given all the caveats on the sketchy info we have so far, would not be out of line at all. However see the comments that followed my post - in reality the 18 "not failed" are most likely irrelevant anyway, x70 or Yazaki cluster cars.

Bottom line is all of the VDO gears fail, that is a good take home from this thread.

Happened to a Saab and Buick too. Both VDO.

My current 1998 S70 is still going
My last car, a 1988 Volvo 240DL stopped at 150,000.
Are you supposed to fix that after they break?
I drove the car for another 8 years:)
