Can I/should I clean up the insides of the cam sensor and distributor cap if they have oil residue on them? I replaced the cap and rotor about 7 months ago so they're practically new. Brake cleaner will be sufficient?

Or a rag, a rag would also work.
I usually just clean what ever oil is sitting there when I pull the cap off.

Oil in the distributor from leaky cam seals is a common cause of misfires. You should definitely clean it out if there is oil in the cap. Brake cleaner and a clean rag or paper towel should work great. If the cam sensor is dirty I would probably use electrical parts cleaner, I'm always careful about that sensor even though it is a simple part, don't want a no-start.

The recesses in the head just wipe them out like Rob posted.

When I rebuilt the head on our 99 I replaced the PCV system at 180,000. I was just getting ready to do the belt and water pump at 240000 since I noticed a leak coming the cam seal behind the vvt on the exhaust cam. I may not have pressed the seal in properly the first time but I will check the PVC system ( glove test) to make sure that isn't why I am having cam seal issues. My question is while I was checking the timing marks and getting the vvt spring tension set (after replacing the cam seals/pump and belt) I had to reset the vvt by a tooth. When I removed the vvt cap ( after new seals and running 20 miles)I had a few maybe 2 to 5 ounces of engine oil come out the vvt but had not seen any oil leaks while testing it running for 20 miles. ( P0014 code timing off) Which is why I pulled the vvt back off and reset it with cam locking tool and crank pulley set to block TDC. I had everything set up the first time then hand cranked the engine two revolutions plus went past TDC then hand cranked engine back to TDC all marks had lined up but I think I had a little slack in the belt and it was off one tooth. It looks to me the way the seals work on the vvt and engine block that oil would have to enter the inner vvt and is held in or prevented leaking by the vvt cap? Just wondering if I may need to redo that seal again........ I guess if I run it for a while and do not get any leaks that is the way the vvt interacts with the cam shaft and engine block and camshaft seal..... appreciate your time as always

And Matt, Keep up the great site, Ive found the Repair database a great addition that other volvo sites should have. Makes it easier to get things done for ALOT less money. *mechanic was going to charge me 150$ for the seal replacement*
