Recurring issue I can't seem to fix
Recurring issue I can't seem to fix
I have a 2000 Volvo V70 2.4. As of right now it is throwing DTC's p1610, P1614, and P1651. I have tried THREE different ETM's. The vehicle is idling rough and hesitates badly while driving. I also did a tune up and replaced the camshaft reset valve as it threw a code once before. Any advice?

The camshaft code begs the question: have you double checked the timing?

ETM is not the problem as these aren't codes that associate with ETM malfunction. The VVT on the inlet cam (if this is a non-turbo) probably needs to be reset. There are write-ups on the topic of VVT adjustment here on MVS and there's a particularly good YouTube video produced by Volvospeed.
The other possibility is the wiring leading to either the VVT OR the camshaft sensor is chafed/shorting.
VVT solenoids often malfunction. Volvo sells a ton of them. Also check oil supply to VVT solenoid and make sure there are no leaks at the cam cover.

Thank you for the quick responses. I had the codes pulled and was told that it was ETM related. The timing belt was done about 10k ago. I checked the time and it is in time. I'll look up the VVT reset and give that a shot. Thank you!

If it was a garage that did the belt and they didn't reset it properly it's their fault. Perhaps arm yourself with the procedure before taking it there.
It's not an EASY procedure and can be messed up easily.

Bumping this back up. The vehicle is now at a Volvo repair shop and the mechanic told me the ETM failed the diagnostic test and needs to be replaced. Before I start arguing with him I was wondering if anyone could give me advice and where to go from here. Same codes, same symptoms.

It may shed a little more light on this topic to let.us know how those codes were read. Was it at.a parts dealer or with your own scanner? Many scanners just can't read Volvos after 1999 model year properly. The 3 codes you listed are not ETM codes however may have been interpreted by the scanner as camshaft codes.

From the Equus.com site:
P1614 Volvo ETS Throttle Angle Not Plausible
P1610 Volvo Ignition Discharge Module (IDM) Group D
P1651 Volvo Maximum Torque Exceeded Fuel Cut-Off Triggered
So one of these is throttle related; not certain what the others mean. Perhaps interpretation of throttle codes is incorrect

The update masks faults in the ETM and allows greater tolerance of reading errors. It was designed by Volvo as a stop-gap measure to assist in (avoiding) their 10 year 200,000 mile warranty campaign.bmxkeeler wrote:Thanks for the help everyone. We re-loaded the ECU ETM update and it solved the rough running issue and got rid of the P1614 and P1610 CEL.
If it has already called faults they will be back but somewhere later down the road. When that happens depends on how you drive and the amount of miles you cover.
