smoke up my tailpipe- I mean from my tailpipe

I brought my S70 to the dealership to have it looked at because of smoke upon start up and a rough idle/overall sluggish behavior. I get a call telling me that I need a new head to the tune of $3900. Are they for real? The smoke is only at startup. If it were really bad, wouldn't it be all of the time? Also, when I brought it there several months ago with the same problems and a check engine light, they told me a bunch of different ailments that I fixed myself (ECT, Baro sensor, etc...) Now, I am thinking they sat on another issue knowing it would lead to a $3900 problem. Would positive crankcase pressure cause something like this? I know with my 850 it a constant problem if not maintained, but haven't found a similar maintenance procedure for the S70.

I'm babbling.....In shock....PLEASE HELP!

Maybe Oil or too rich mixture?

Or it's a diesel

I second that....lot's of people want to take advantage of "rich car" folks (like we are??) and it's absurd. Get a second opinion from a reputable shop. Could be something very simple, or some of the "other" stuff you mentioned in your post.

White is usually water
Bluish grey is usually oil
Black is usually gas/fuel

Why go to the dealer? There are plenty of independents in business, most of whom will not take you for a ride. They rely on customers being satisfied with the work they turn out and word of mouth advertising. The dealer does not care if you are not happy with his work - there are plenty of other owners queueing up to throw their money into his cash drawer.

Sorry, this is my usual rant when dealers are mentioned, but my advice is to talk to other car owners, not necessarily Volvo, and find out who does their work and are they happy with it.

I get a touch of smoke at start-up when the car is hot, shut off, then turned back on in a short peroid of time. Probably a little leak down around the valve seals. I just ignore it for now. Wear and tear.
