Hello!

Just thought I would post here to introduce myself. I currently live in leyland Lancashire and drive a Volvo 2002 s60 D5 manual (suffering from injector problems and cheap tyres). Used for commuting as well as long trips home to the Cotswolds most weekends. I'm only 21 but work as a Powertrain engineer. Purchased the Volvo early this year.

My intentions were to keep it as a stop gap car till I could afford an XC70 however that won't be till late next year so I decided to have a bit of fun with this one.

Previous owner has ruined the car with cheap front tyres which provide absolutely no grip (spins wheels it wet in 4th) so I'm looking to either replace all 4 tyres for a matching set of good all season tyres (advice welcomed) and/or upgrading to 18" alloys ideally before the weather gets too cold!

I will be looking to perform more upgrades each month (with payday) but decent tyres has become a top priority.

Hi Chris, not too sure I would bother with 18" on an S60 firstly it will reduce the available steering lock, increase the harshness of the ride (still lots of potholes in the roads around Lancashire), depending upon what it currently has fitted 17" are about the best compromise between ride quality and looks, there is also a much wider variety of tyres to choose from for the 17" wheels.

The last set I put on my V70 were Avon ZZ3 much better handling and far less road noise, had about 20K out of the set on the front and had to change them earlier this month, cost is around £96 per corner fitted (Black Circle Tyres online).

Incidentally if you fancy coming along to one of the local Volvo owners meets I will let you know when and where, we usually meet up once every couple of months either Guys Court between Preston and Garstang on the A6 but sometimes further afield depending upon who is going, typical turn out is between ten and twenty cars and we always have at least one copy of Vida/ Dice at the meets for free diagnostics/ fault code resets etc. Next meet is scheduled 27/10/13 at The MaltHouse, Rishworth HX6 4QB - Mike

Hi thanks for the advice already.

I will come along to that meet any idea on the time?

How are there's tyres in the wet/snow? Home is rather rural and my previous vehicle was a land rover.

Is there any great difference between 17" wheel sizes? For example is there something specific I should look for on eBay to avoid wrong offset/stud pattern/ width. Also what size tyres would you recommend fitted to them? 225/45?

The Rishworth meet is from 11:00AM it is a large pub with a decent size car park, getting there before the pub opens at 12:00 usually means there is car parking available for all of us, decent food available as well. Take a coat though as for the last three years at this meet it has rained!

In the wet the tyres are fine, for winter I have another set of wheels with winter tyres fitted, these go on for a couple of months if required.

I use 225/45/17 you can fit any 17" from an S60 or V70 phase two as they are the same, the V70 phase one wheels do fit but have a slightly different offset, that said my phase one V70 is running on S60 "Thor" alloy wheels.

The following shows you what to look for the 17" Volvo alloys, there are a few 18" listed at the end, all these wheels will fit your car, tyre size is also shown for each wheel - Mike
