1983 760 GLE Inner Tie Rods Will Not Fit

Post by Bluevanacd2005 »

I recently bought a 1983 turbo diesel 760 GLE here in the US. I found a worn-out inner tie rod on the passenger side. I removed it, and read up on the car having two different types of racks (Cam/TRW and ZF). I looked at mine, thought it looked like the ZF and ordered the part. When it arrived, it did not fit. The threads were bigger. So assuming it was now the Cam Gear/TRW style, I ordered the other one. When it arrived, it also had bigger threads. (Both parts were from Rockauto, and I explained the situation to customer service, but they couldn't help me.)

I now have the inner tie rod off the car, and two new ones that do not fit. They all have the same threads that fit the outer tie rod - M14x2. The inner part that threads into the rack are what is different on all three. The one from my car is the smallest, the threads are M14x1.5. But I cannot find a 3rd type to buy online.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a 3rd type of rack Volvo used?

Thanks for the help,

-Spenser

One type steering rack that you didn't mention is Koyo.
CAM/TRW with 14 mm threads: 9140504
CAM/TRW with 18 mm threads: 1359347

It appears that a 89 and newer rack may have been installed in your 760.

OK thanks for the link. I see it describes where to find the identification Tag and found I have "steering gear 2" - the cam gear rack.
