1984 Volvo 242DL Alternator Belts replace how to?

Post by Dome »

Hi,

I've been looking high and low for a how to replace the Alternator Belts on my '84 Volvo 242DL.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

I have the Haynes manual but it is lacking detail.

Thanks!

Looks like there is just one adjuster bolt and the alternator has to be levered with something? :?:

On my 85 245, the front crank pulley has spacers that you change around to change the gap width of the place where the v belt fits in. It is weird and troublesome but it is apparently how they decided to make the belt looser or tighter. The correct belt is apparently very close in circumference pretty easy to adjust using that method.

I'm not exactly sure how this works on a pre-85, but maybe this link will be of some help:

The a/c belt has to come off first. It is removed by removing the outer crankshaft pulley half but removing the two bolts and 4 nuts, all 10 mm heads.
Once the a/c belt is off the nut above alternator on the tension arm is loosened and the alternator can be pushed towards engine block if it doesn't go inward due to belt tension. TO tension belt you can use a pry bar to pry alternator away from block. Be sure the pry bar doesn't pinch the wiring between block and alt. Get it very tight with pry bar and tighten the tension arm nut then release pry bar. The tension will relax when you release pry bar due to the rubber bushing the alternator has at lower mounting bolt.
