05 XC90 2.5T Change oil filter without changing the oil?

Post by boksalg »

Yeah, I know it sounds off...
Just took ownership of the car, oil is underway. ETA a couple of weeks.
I can't feel particles in the oil when felt between thumb and index finger, and color seems ok.
Stocked up on oil filters.

Seeing how the filter is accessible from the engine bay, could I change the oil filter without changing the oil, or would the oil come flowing out the filter socket upon removal?

I expect a proper oil change with additional filter in a month.

Whats the point if the oil seems reasonably clean and not gritty???
Unless you plan on doing a lot of miles in the next month i would leave it until your ordered oil arrives and do both the filter and oil in one hit.

Hi! I misunderstood the filter and believed it sat upright accessible from the engine bay (no idea where that sick idea came from). The answer to my question "is it possible to change filter without oil" is NO. Due to the removal will allow the oil to flow freely out of the engine, as (I'm sure) all other engines as well.

The filter removal will only allow about 1/2-1 quart to come out. The filter removal does not open a passageway from the sump bottom. The oil filter is connected to the pump so you loose only the oil around the filter and some from above. You can swap out a filter with a quart of oil any time you want. I do it whenever we see a leaking filter or filter housing.

If the oil level is low on the dipstick, you might not have too much oil coming out from the oil filter compartment.
