Resetting Engine System Service Required message

2001 S80 T6 Turbo, 129k miles. I usually do all my own work.
Message "Engine System Service Required" is always on with red triangle light.
No other warning lights are on.
No codes come up on the OBD-2 code reader.
All fluids are full.
Engine seems to be running fine.
Throttle is a little bit jerky when starting off from rest, but normal at all other speeds.
I tried disconnecting the battery for two hours, and the message did not come on immediately after that just idling at home, but was back again the next day when I drove the car a few miles.
Is there any way to read any codes related to this message?

I bought my car with that message and I couldnt get it to clear with OBD2 readers. Turns out Volvo has two sets of codes: one of Engine System Service Required and on of Check Engine.

I've found things in the former are problems related to the siren module, the crappy auto-dimming rear view mirror and the like. You either need to get friendly with a Volvo shop and have them read the codes with a fancy reader or get your hands on a BSR PPC1 reader. It's pretty much a Volvo specific reader. I don't think they make them anymore but you might be able to find one on ebay. They're not cheap, I bought mine for $250-$300, but it helps a ton.

Pardon my mistake, the central triangle warning light is orange, not red, indicating a non-urgent fault.
I discovered that with the door closed and the engine running, by holding down the READ button on the end of the left stalk along with the trip meter button for ten seconds I get a beep and then a code. The code is just 44, nothing else. I have the VADIS but cannot find anything in there about code 44.
I googled volvo s80 code 44 message center and got a hit from this website, someone had this code and said it was related to the cruise control. He changed the brake diaphragm position sensor and it was fixed. I can't find anything in VADIS about cruise control, but I did find the brake pedal position sensor. Its in the engine bay on the brake booster. I never use cruise control but I'll try that first.
If anyone knows anything more about code 44 please let me know. One would think there would be a list of codes published somewhere. Thanks.

No time yet to try the brake position sensor on the brake booster theory.
I noticed the wiring loom running along the top of the engine to the 6 ignition coils is crumbling.
I have discovered how to reset/clear the text message "Engine System Service Required" and orange triangle.
Trip meter T1 and T2 were showing 0.7 miles.
Hold down the trip meter reset button.
Turn the ignition key on to position 2.
Keep holding the trip meter button until the message and orange triangle go off. It took a long time, maybe 20 seconds.
Release the button and start the car.
I drove 2 miles and the text message and orange triangle did not come on again.
Code 44 is also gone now.

I found nothing wrong with the brake pedal position sensor.
Another web site hit suggested that Code 44 might mean the computer has detected a random misfire.
So I pulled all the coils and spark plugs. I found two spark plugs were not screwed in tight, which could have meant some compression loss and possibly a random misfire. I've never come across loose spark plugs before. They were installed by a dealer's mechanic about 5 years ago. I cleaned all the plugs and coil connections. I also removed all the crumbing plastic sleeve on the wiring to the coils and wrapped all those wires with electrical tape, though I did not see any other damage to the wires, then installed new plastic sleeve.
I've put 30 miles on it since and the text message and orange triangle have not come back.

I've found that if I open my oil cap and then start the car, the message goes away. Of course I didn't have any OBDI codes or lights on, just the engine system service required message. I've done this twice now and it worked. I use lucas oil stabilizer with full synthetic, and I think sometimes the oil sticks to the oil level sensor and gives a false reading that the oil level is too high. Could be wrong but it works for me.

BTW, I stopped using premium gasoline maybe 3 years back and I wonder if it had anything to do with the error message. Hope nothing serious is wrong with my 2001 S60.

Sounds related to the vacuum system and when you pull the oil cap off that makes a difference. I have a vacuum\booster issue that disables cruise as well, haven't bothered to fix it.

If you're using non-premium gas theres a chance that over time you will scorch your exhaust valves and seats as the motor adjusts ignition advance to cope with the faster flame propagation. Result is that your valves spend more time exposed to the flames from the exiting gas. Believe it or not, this is the most common issue with OBD cars that request higher octane fuels. Detonation and so on not really an issue unless you have a defective knock sensor. Scorched valve seats though are much more common.
I dont think your fuel choice is related to the code you saw though.

umm i did not know about that code resetting or showing the code number with trip computer stalk and READ button stalk. i just got the same display on too
