2003 XC70 VVT Exhaust Pulley end play?

I am doing timing belt, CAM seals etc.
I noticed that the vvt Exhaust Pulley can be moved in and out about 1/8" or so.
Is that normal end play or is the pulley shot?
The intake pulley has no play in it.

Once the belt's removed it's a lot more than that. When referencing the position with belt off be sure to rotate it fully clockwise so it comes to a stop.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm talking end play ie. left to right with respect to the car not the rotational movement.
