Clunk on cold acceleration

Post by coitdeck »

Recently, when my Cross Country is cold, I get a fairly loud clunk or thump when getting on the onramp of the freeway near my house. It doesn't really jar the car, and I don't think it is the transmission shifting. I seems to go away after the car has been driven awhile.
A repair shop told me over the phone that it could be serious and expensive.
Any thoughts?

Could be your upper torque arm bushing. It is the round one above your engine on the driver's side. See if the rubber in the metal circle is broken.

It could be the torque mount. It COULD be your transmission, check the fluid for color. A tranny service is a VERY good idea anyway if you have never done one and have no records of one.
It basically will save your trans in the future as if it never was serviced the chances of it going kablooie is very good!

JRL, is the Transmission fluid change something that could be easily done by an average skilled individual or is it something a person should have done at a tranny shop or volvo joint?

Best DIY post on the subject, IMHO, complete with color photos:
