1991 volvo 740 manual transmission swap
Auto trans just went in my 91 740 wagon with 267k miles! While I was searching my local junk yard I came across a 1988 740 sedan with the turbo engine and a 5spd which had been in an apparent recent accident car still had current inspection.....when I got thinking why not transfer the engine (160k miles) and trans from that car into mine?...Heres my dilemma I'm not sure if this is one of the "electronic overdrive"transmissions.I notice that the shifter handle was missing and it had 2 wires inside, I'm pretty confident that I can do this swap with little trouble as long as I get the pedals,drive-shaft,master and slave cylinders and all the other doo dads!I guess my question is whats the easiest way to make sure the overdrive works properly when I install this in my car and whether or not this is 1 of those transmissions I've read about with the electronic overdrive?Has anyone done this swap that can give me a few pointers?Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm not quite sure if it is a 5spd....this was all an after thought after I had left the junk yard. The transmission seemed to have a 4spd pattern but when I did research when I got home it seemed in 88 740 would have a 5spd any one know how to tell the difference between the 2?
If your donor car is a 1988, with wires that reach all the way up to the shift knob, I think it is the 4 speed pattern with the electric overdrive switch. I have a 1991 240 with a M47 transmission that has 5 separate forward gears and no wires are inside my shift knob / lever. You should be able to find a small metal build plate pop-riveted inside the engine bay of your donor car, probably near the headlights. It should have a few build options on it, including the type of transmission M46, M47 AW70, etc.
