Re: My 1st P2 (XC70) Project impossible?
Mike, There is a coupling on the steering input shaft just where it enters the engine bay, I usually release it here and drop it all down with the subframe - Mike

@tolian2 I see the point about the thirteen yr old thing but I'm committed (or should it be committable
) now and going to see it through.
Mike I've released the 10mm bolt but the coupling shaft won't drop down through the coupling even with hard blows and trying different angles of drop on the assembly.
I released the steering rack nuts and bolts so the subframe can drop without the steering rack but now realise that the rear engine mount rests all its weight on the actual steering rack so this is a moot point unless I can transfer the load from this mount to the subframe by means of some bracketry.

Some more agony today. It had to happen eventually. Engine will receive new PCV, o rings, temp sensor, thermostat, water pump, spark plugs, inlet gasket, accessory belt and new idler roller & timing belt and pulleys.
The gearbox will likely get a full clutch pack, B4 servo and solenoid refurbishment. Fluid smells & looks burned.
It's warm here in Melbourne and the roof on the carport is yet to be nailed on.

It's been 12 months since I started this thread so I don't know about the time aspect. Thank heavens we had a long weekend for Australia Day and what better way to celebrate than to revive some Swedish technology.tolian2 wrote:with lots of will and time on your hands anything could be accomplished.
The missus was not a happy camper yesterday......lots of mess and clutter arpund. The will is being slowly eroded.
The plan is to fit the subframe back in, then drop the gearbox in then finally drop the engine in. It's just too heavy as a complete unit to try and lift it back up while those legs from the hydraulic lift taking space under the car.

The third photo facing timing belt, one with the fluid tub, shows two water pumps. Is this a different engine then B5244T3
This amount of stuff would add to my anxiety.
Good work Mike.

Achieved quite a bit today and engine has been wheeled in to storage so I can tackle the transmission.
A Hepu water pump went in to replace the near new unlabelled one as well as new PCV, o rings, oil filter, temp sensor, thermostat, spark plugs, inlet gasket, accessory belt and new idler roller & timing belt.

Mike if you haven't re-attached the sump yet it might be worth trying to clear out the PCV channel in the sump while it is off, you can see both ends of the channel in the following picture although I did remove the baffles to make it easier to see where the duct exits in to the sump, you will still be able to get at this with the baffles in place:

Thanks Mike I will revisit this before I fit the engine as I didn't fill with oil.
The engine oil was black and the sump was contaminated with small carbon pieces. The screen on the pickup pipe had one large barnacle of carbonised oil which was so large I had difficulty getting it out. It was a disaster waiting to happen even though this was a replacement engine that the previous owner fitted & had done less than 10,000 kms on. The engine had no PCV pressure so at least the rings weren't shot.
Goes to show that if you don't oversee the process of replacement and ensure these checks are done it's not much better to replace an engine at all. The fitter was a local garage.

If the sump pan has black tar like deposits in it try and get hold of a gallon or two of jet fuel (local airport perhaps) if not viable paraffin isn't too bad, fill the sump with it and leave for a day or two, this will unstick anything in the sump cleaning it out effectively with little effort, Kerosene (jet fuel) is the better option if you can source it - Mike
