98 S70 glt Engine issues major!

Post by Duake »

Recently I replaced my heater core and have had no problems with my car. I replaced the rear struts a couple weeks ago and this past weekend just replaced the front shocks. Well, this past Monday, two days ago, my engine just decides to just lose any and all power while driving. I'll be fine for a while and then for no reason, engine can't go past 3000 RPM and holding the pedal down does absolutely nothing. This morning it got worse and the car won't go past 1500 rpm. I'm literally writing this on my phone in a parking lot trying to get this posted so you guys could help me.

My oil cap has deteriorated and it's original. Any replacements don't match the original and they are garbage. I replaced it already with a cheap one, but oil came out. Put my old original one back on and will have to come up with something better. I have to replace my head gasket and that's coming in today or tomorrow.

Anythoughts on the SUDDEN loss of engine power and RPMs? Something clogging whilE I'm driving? I also ordered a new MAF sensor. All help is appreciated!

Oh and after my engine doesn't work right, it smells like rotten eggs or sulphur. What would that indicate?

I just read that it may be my catalytic converter clogging up. Any way to clean it at home?

Don't think you can clean it, might want to have a "test" pipe put in to help verify. Possible ice up inside intercooler? Cold in AL now right? Raise hood, have someone apply gas and see if any intercooler related hoses collapse. There are vacuum gauge ways to trouble shoot Exhaust blockage. Slowly decreasing vacuum at idle maybe?

Yeah it's cold here and just recently, so I was thinking condensation build up inside the engine and/or gas tank and causing the fuel to be messed up. I've also started thinking it might be bad gas. I manage to sometimes sit in neutral and get the RPMs to go past 3000 and the engine acts normal after revving it a couple times. Like I'm burning the bad gas or water out of it.

Hmm, does sound like the intercooler might have iced up some. Maybe a can of drigas just to help in case of water.

I had a similar issue on a VW I used to own. I was driving on the highway cruising along at 70 mph and power just dropped. Car would keep running with no stall but I had no power at all. I was able to get home and my cat converter was completely plugged up.
I replaced the cat (no way to clean it that I know of) and power was much improved.

sounds like your cat collapsed. run it for a bit and see if its glowing red. you can also remove the downpipe from the turbo and if it runs better thats your issue.

Where would the downpipe be for the turbo? Is that the big pipe that runs up from the intercooler past the air filter over the engine and to the back towards the firewall?

I'm literally trying to get home right now and this is a major issue since I need to drive over a mountain to vet there.

Quick test for cat.

Ask someone to step on the gas pedal while you hold a piece of paper at the tailpipe.
When the engine rpm is up, the paper should "flop" back and forth. If not, the cat is blocked.

no the downpipe is part of the exhaust. it is the pipe that goes from the turbo to under the car, not the one that goes over the motor, thats the charge pipe. in order to remove the downpipe you will need to remove the heat shields that cover the turbo.
