Hi, yesterday I changed my timing belt and water pump.
During the tear down I accidentally moved the cam sprockets, clockwise. I moved them back, counter clockwise and installed the new belt and tensioner etc.. I turned the engine two revolutions by hand and everything seemed fine, timing marks lined up etc. I started the engine and it runs fine with no fault codes but the valve train now makes noise. It's not loud but it is there. Before I did the job the only noise I had was what I assumed was tensioner and idler pulley wear. I have moved the belt back two notches, that is moved the crank back two teeth from from the timing mark (one at a time and checked the engine in between and heard the same noise). It was late and I was outside so I aligned everything back up to the notches but the belts back on and parked it.
I am wondering if turning them counterclockwise was wrong and maybe I should turn the cams a full rotation clockwise.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim I don't think the cams would have slipped a complete turn.I would not advise turning them at this point.Sometimes if they slip it will purge lifters of oil and take awhile to pump air out. I would suggest a
stethascope to more verify your noise.

James, I thought these had solid lifters, is that not the case? I thought I read that yesterday while reading other forums. I have never had the engine apart or even worked on one of these before except for my general maintenance.
You are right, they didn't slip a complete turn just a couple of teeth. My thought was that since they are only supposed to be turned clockwise that maybe turning them counter clockwise screwed something up. Like I say I have no idea what the cams look like but I'm guessing they must not be like the old 350's and similar types.
As far as the lifters go , if they are hydraulic how long do you think it would take to purge? I let the engine warm up while I replaced the coolant and the noise didn't change intensity. I don't really want to drive it even though the noise is minimal. I do the maintenance to save money and if I ruin the engine it's counter productive.
Thanks,
Jim

James, no and to be honest not sure what the CCV is. I just got back in from buttoning it up. Yesterday I retarded the timing twice and today I advanced it twice and always the same noise. I am writing it off to not paying enough attention while it was running before. It is just a bunch of clicking and ticking. It's not noise I have never heard before on my last pick-up but I don't recall hearing it on this car.
I'll keep an eye on the post and see if anybody else has any ideas. The engine runs great otherwise, I say before I've taken it out on a test drive
. Hopefully I don't regret that.
Thanks again,
Jim

I just took it out for a drive and it runs perfect. I don't really notice the noise with the hood down so perhaps it was there all along. I'll listen to some friends cars and see if theirs sounds similar.
