Take them out as soon as you can.These cars doesn't like them.They will not work properly in these cars.It is a miracle that they are working properly for now,but it doesn't mean it will last.
Put in OEM Volvo spark plugs (the pack of five) or just the cheap copper Bosch or NGK properly gapped.

Why don't Volvos like the Iridium plugs? Something wrong with them?

After fixing the problem last week, on Tuesday, the pump got more "sediment" or whatever sucked into it. I took it out to clean it off and to see if I couldn't get the remnants out of the bottom. Well, I took a light and shown it down around the tank and found some scary results:

Image

I don't know what this junk is, but apparently it has crystallized into a rock form and probably around 3" long. There is another on the right side and you can barely make it out on the right in the tank. Also, you can see the little particles on the bottom where the pump goes and a larger chunk on the left in the chamber.

ANY ideas on what this stuff could be? I plan on getting the little metal wire "hands" where you push on the plunger and you can grab stuff with them. I'll see if I can't get these "rocks" out and take a picture of them.I'll use a siphon to get the small junk out as well.

I'm not familiar with the gas tank on a GLT but if doable, I'd pull it out and have it professionally flushed clean. Something's really not right there. A long shot, but do you always get gas at the same place? I'm wondering if maybe you got a load from the bottom of their tank. For a time, try a new station, one that gets a lot of business. Be sure to use at least mid grade and fill the tank.

+1 on FLUSH THAT TANK. :shock: You may be looking at another fuel pump and fuel filter too, cheap compared to what is "downstream." Siphon the tank as empty as possible. You'll want to put the rear on jackstands and have a board distributing the weight of a jack snugged under the plastic tank before removing the three bolts for two straps. Don't cross-thread them when reinstalling. The tank is HDPE (#2) if I remember correctly, but I doubt you want to go down that road. :twisted:

No. Avoid coppers trying to save a buck or two as they won't last as long, Bosch won't warranty them and they cost more in the long run (replacements per 100k, labor, plug wire stress at change). The OEM plugs DO have iridium (Bosch FR7DPP+, an "OE Specialty" plug, not an off-the-shelf type), albeit a platinum-iridium alloy. Any parts store that doesn't stock them can order them in (see the link). Run what you have 'til bad* then switch.

"Platinum" ones are a low-iridium (and platinum) alloy.

"Iridium" ones are a higher-iridium (and platinum) alloy.
* The non-finewire ones (just a dot on the ceramic center electrode face) can foul easier. Check.

"Copper" are actually a CuYt alloy.

The "PP" is for "Double Platinum" refers to both the ground and center electrodes being "platinum."

Nope.
Sugar = water soluble.
Gasoline = not water soluble.
Hence, just like water and oil... :wink:
Water (H2O) = very polar molecule (10.2).
Gasoline (C8H18) = negligible polarity (0.1).
The polarity is what lets water pull apart sucrose (sugar), whereas gasoline is going to have a hard time overcoming sugar's own bonds.

If you have water in the gas, it can mix with that. There might also be ethanols, alcohols (Heet, Iso-Heet), detergents, and other stuff in there, but the "sugar in gas" stuff is a myth.

I think I might be able to open it up again this weekend so I can get that junk out. I don't know if I'll be able to maneuver it around the plastic circular levels, but I'll try.

I actually get gas from multiple places, so I don't think that's the problem. I always use 89 octane when I fill up. I've used Octane Boost a couple times, but I don't know if that really does anything.

Okay, I finally got all that crap out of my gas tank! I actually managed to shove my whole hand in there and just pull it all out. I will have to take pictures and post them a little later.

abscate: I will have to send you some of this just to see what it is!
