Fuel overflowing when trying to refuel.

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Fuel overflowing when trying to refuel.

Post by rlbrnch »

I have a 2002 S80 I recently purchased. For some reason I cannot refuel the car. Everytime I try to fuel the vehicle it overflows back at the handle of the nozzle and then out the overflow tube under by rear tire. has this ever happenned to anyone before? I cannot even find it on google. The car is at a dealer but I am anxious now.

I had a very similar experience with my 2000 T6. It has not happened since. However, on that same day my cooling fan had died and the car was running very hot and it was a very hot day (about 90 degrees) outside.

My 2000 2.9 did the same thing earlier this month on a weekend trip to Florida. Both the temprature and the car were quite hot. No problem since, however, so I have to go with the temperature theory.

The problem is a clogged breather tube. It is located under the car just behind the gas tank door . It looks like a tiny muffler and is easily accessed when on a lift. Simply blow compressed air into the end of the tube, but watch your eyes. It has happened to me twice. The first time a spider web was the problem, the 2nd time it was about 100 dried baby spider carcasses. Good luck. Let us know if that worked........
