1999 Volvo V70 stubborn driver's side axle...

Post by paredown »

Can't believe this is still in pieces, but I had a work accident last fall, and then the snow hit.

It finally got warm enough to get back out and finish this.

Finished the passenger side with new CV boots, control arm, etc.

I'm having trouble with the driver's side though.

Short pry bar, straight pull--I've tried a few different ways to get the axle to release from the transmission and so far, no joy.

Any suggestions for removal?

I use a cold chisel as a wedge.

I line it up offset from the center - to the right as you are looking at it - at the back of the inner CV joint. With the tip of the chisel in between the back of the CV joint and the face of the transaxle I use a hammer to tap the chisel upward. A few taps, and not much more than taps, with a 5lb sledge hammer and it will pop free.

Thanks for the tip--that worked!

All back together.

Now I just have to figure out why the brake warning light is on...

It should be either the low brake fluid or the connector from the brake fluid tank cap is disconnected or have bad connection.

If the '99 have a brake pads with "time to replace" reminder...maybe it's disconnected in the process of replacing the axle.

There is no reason to ever use a pry bar on an axle on these cars. The wedge method always works, it is easier, and unlike the bar you have no risk of cracking the transmission case.

Panicked too soon--third start--brake warning light cleared---

and best of all, the ABS light cleared (I soldered the wire where some bumpkin had run it inside the control link and one wire had completely worn through.

Now on to the 'check engine light'

Yay!

Forgot to add--thanks to MVS and its members for all the information and help!

One more small question, though. I have a small ?metallic rubbing noise coming from driver's side front. No sound I can hear in reverse, rubs and gets more frequent as speed increases while driving, and seems to go away when brakes are applied.

Does this sound like a dragging brake shoe?
Or?
(Will pull off wheel to check on my own) but interested in what the experts say.
