98 V70 Noisy Oil Thermostat Thing

Post by rmmagow »

On cold start my engine is making quite a racket and I am pretty sure it is that oil bypass thing at the side of the engine. If I recall, that is an NLA part on the engine. My question is does it matter? It is quite noticeable in the frigid temps we are having in the NE but I start the car, run in the house and by the time I come out, maybe 2 to 5 mins the motor is back to quite and sounds fine. I run 10W30 Synth pretty much year round, have 213K on the motor and tranny and all works fine as far as I can tell. so live with it or see about finding a replacement part (which I won't). Is "live-with-it" going to shorten the life on the motor?

I haven't heard of any bad things happening just because it is noisy.

I don't have this noise thingy but strictly for my curiosity (or for my own knowledge), what is the exact cause of the noise?
Just an academic question...

Weak internal spring I think. The spring should hold firmly until the oil's hot, it doesn't and lets the pressure thing flop around inside. Little guessing and a little reading from god-knows-where.

I think someone on Volvospeed initially identified it.

That thing's such a pain to get to that I have just ignored it for 8 years. Nothing bad has ever happened because of it.

In fact it was "warm" this morning, 18F, and it made very little noise at startup. I bet it makes no noise at all once we start having some reasonable temps in the morning.
