1999 C70 Car pulling to the right.

Post by C7T »

My 99 C70 convertible automatic is pulling to the right. It seems to start almost as soon as I press the gas or around 10mph. I have to hold steering wheel 15º-20º to keep it straight. Once I hit the brakes it straightens out and doesn't seem to pull again until pressing the gas again. Once it starts pulling the angle that I have to hold the wheel stays constant regardless of speed. I put the car on a lift and put the car in D and the RF wheel turned the LF wheel began to turn made some clunking noise, made some jerky movements, and then stopped. This also made the abs and trac control lights come on. Both lights went away after shutting the car off and starting it back up. I began to wonder if the diff is going bad, but I'm not hearing any noises when driving and while the car was on the lift the wheels spun in opposite directions when manually turned. If anyone could please give an opinion it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Think the diff is fine...Sounds like you're in need of a new axle...one of the CV's is binding, badly. Are any of the axle boots cracked?

The boots on the problem side look good. Just replaced the right side cv axle bc it had bad boots. The problem mentioned was happening before replacing the other side.

Reading through this again...turn OFF the Tracs/stability control system and drive it. See if it still pulls to one side.

I think what you were describing was the ABS system braking the left wheel because it was, for some reason, spinning faster than the right wheel and the car figured that you were spinning that wheel in the snow or something.

I suppose this could be a bad ABS sensor on the right side or a cracked sensor ring on the left axle giving erroneous readings.

Wheels spinning opposite is normal of course. If you look at a schematic for a differential you can see why. I think Justin nailed this one with a bad CV diagnosis.

Your last hope would be a hanging caliper but you would feel a stiff turning wheel plus it would run hot. Really hot. Hot enough to burn the skin off your fingertips so that you have to type with one hand for two weeks.

Although I really think Justin nailed it, since you did do some axle work you want to triple check that the axles are fully engaged in the transmission side. Get safely under the car and pull on the axles where they go into the tranny, they shouldn't budge, just tiny bit of play.

Thanks for all the replies. Turning off Traction Control has no effect. I can guarantee the replaced axle is set correctly. I'm thinking Justin is correct that the other axle may be bad. I know the wheels should spin inopposite directions when turning manually I was just giving all the info possible to help with diagnosis. Although I did forget to mention that I checked for a frozen/hanging caliper. I'll try replacing it in a few days . I'm a lil under the weather so neither myself or the car are going anywhere.
On another note anyone know where to get the weather stripping where the top meets the deck lid?

If you have a failed ball joint or control arm bushing that could also explain the intermittent pulling to one side.

This is dangerous and needs to be fixed ASAP

I've checked the control arm bushings and the ball joints. I think it has to be whatever is causing one wheel to have power and the other not having power. I'm going to try the other cv axle Wed.

Strange as this may sound, if you've recently thrown a wheel weight it can cause this as well. With all the potholes around here after this winter, I'd at least give a look to make sure you don't have a wheel out of balance.
