1990 760-wont run

Post by angeltease »

I have a 1990 760 turbo, last week the air intake hose melted and I believe the melted rubber too was sucked into the turbo. My husband changed the hose, now it will start-Sometimes! Runs rough will cut off if you don't stay on the gas....and it will run (kinda) for 3 mins, at which point it doesn't matter how high you had it revved it will just stop...we took it for a test drive an hour ago we drove down the street, which is slightly sloped n turned around at the bottom...my husband gave it some gas to start back up the street n it got no power, almost sounded like it was in neutral then it made 5 or so fast short hisses... ss ss ss ss ss then it cut off...just replaced both fuel pumps and hear them working. Just replaced ignition coil.

Sorry for the typo that "too" was supposed to be "goo"

Was the turbo air intake hose replaced before, after, or at the same time as the fuel pumps? Trying to figure out the order of the repairs and symptoms.

Replaced at the same time when the fuel pump left him stranded he noticed the hose had melted and been sucked into the turbo so he cleaned the visible remnants of the hose and replaced the hose and fuel pumps

Make sure that the fuel pumps aren't wired backwards.

Checked fuel pump wiring last night. Just noticed that the ignition coil was very loose in bracket. Compared to old coil its much smaller than the old one...put the old one back on and as long as we held the wires on the old coil it fired up over and over back to back...the new coil sloshes when shaken...not like oil but like water...the coil looks sealed to me...do some coils come full of water and I just got the wrong part? Or is there some problem in the car that is causing it?

Will it run with the old coil mounted in it's bracket like it was before?

No, and after a few starts it wouldn't start it every time. It was back to waiting a couple hours to get a start die after a few mins. Bought the correct replacement coil put it in...it ran well for 20 miles on the fwy ..my husband stopped at a 76 to get a pack of smokes n now he's stuck there...he said it started but when he made a u turn to get out of the station it cut off again...I'm stumped...the coil fixed the problem...could the car be destroying coils somehow

Okay, so we replaced the power stage because every time it cut out since my last post my husband tapped on the power stage and it would start back up...so its cutting out much less frequently but...the problem isn't gone...we're thinking the electrical connector may be at fault...does anyone have any ideas? Is there some fancy relearn poocedure or does something need to be reset?
