The vehicle configuration of the 2002 expects a 5 speed TCM and that is not something readily altered in the car's software. I won't say impossible because cracking the code on automobile networks is something more people are doing every day. I don't know if taking all the networked modules out of the 2000 plus some harnesses and the VGLA module is worth it. Oh the Immobilizer module has to go with the group too.
The instrument cluster is the main/gateway module on that car and stores configuration and VIN plus handles security ID of the modules so it has to go into the 2002 but will store VIN for 2000. IS Virginia a state where they interrogate car for emissions testing? If so then the inspection will come up with a VIN that is not for the labeled VIN of the 2002. This could get interesting. Get criminal too.

Wow. I had thought about all the electronics having to talk to each other, but didn't expect that the cluster would have to move. In my part of the state they don't have to do the breath test, so the interrogation would not come up. I am going to try a new belt. If it starts I'll do the rest of the stuff you should do with it.

Now, if it is saved, I was looking at another 2000 (with a bad engine) as a possible interior parts car because my 2000's interior is falling apart. Dashboard especially. If I remove another vehicle's dash and put it all in mine, is it just the cluster module that has to stay with my car? ugh! Why do they make this so hard!?!?

CCM may also need swapping but that's child's play.

Just an update. I opened her up this weekend. The timing belt was intact but had walked off the pulleys because the water pump siezed. The "screaming" sound my wife heard was the belt sliding over the teeth on the pump and the sound of it walking out through the plastic timing belt cover. It literally wore a groove through the cover showing the timing belt path. At some point it popped off the pump and became fairly ineffective. :o I was able to align all the timing marks to their TDC position without difficulty (but had to move them in small increments each so as not to deal with interference or compression). So this week I'll buy a cheap water pump, put it in next weekend and try to start her up. If she goes, I'll do a good water pump, tensioner, idler, timing belt, serpentine belt, serp tensioner. If she doesn't start, off the the donation center!

They're all pretty cheap, buy an Aisin WP and be done with it

when I used "interrogate" I mean hook up a machine and read engine control unit status for emissions testing done by the car itself. The info read out includes VIN and the VIN stamped into car would disagree with the electronic readout VIN.

It's a sad day at my house. It appears the engine on the 2000 C70 is gone. Put a water pump on and put the timing belt back on. No compression in several cylinders. I had aligned all the timing marks and they are still aligning correctly. I have a question about that though. Since the gear on the crankshaft is smaller than the gears on the camshafts, could you be 360 degrees "out of phase" on the crank? I would imagine the crank goes 720 for every 360 on the cams, right? I didn't think about that this weekend, but should I try to rotate the crank 360 and see what I get?

I realize the foolishness of my last question. 360 degrees will put the crankshaft in the same position with all the cylinders exactly where they were. Compression should be the same regardless. Is it really possible I damaged enough vavles that I'm gettin no compression on 3 of 5 cylinders, or should I consider that my timing is off by a tooth or two? My wife is very sad about her baby.
