1996 850 GLT - Introduction and a few questions

Post by graymond127 »

Hi all,

This is Peach (the sedan), my 96 850 GLT. N/A, 5 speed, 125k miles. Red wagon belongs to my roommate, as did the white wagon (has been sold).

(sorry for the URL and not embedded image... the picture was far too large and I am not savvy enough to resize it)

I bought the car at the end of last summer, and have since fixed a few basic things (driver's heated seat, installed a 3rd brakelight that was missing, replaced an axle, replaced the odo gear, new driver's door check, gave the interior a much needed cleaning, and a few other small things).

Now for my questions...

As you may have seen in the picture, the mounting holes for the front left quarter panel molding rusted out, and I lost the molding on the highway.... oddly, my passenger side looks pretty solid. I would like to weld in some new metal and reattach a new piece of molding. However, I do not know (and cannot find any pictures of) what the mounting holes should look like. My idea was to remove the passenger side molding and make a template of the holes... Does anybody know how to remove this piece of molding? It is clearly different than removing the door moldings.

Additionally, as I get nearer to graduation I would like to take advantage of as many expensive tools at my school as I can. I plan on turning a new shift knob on a lathe, and making a shortshift plate. Does anybody know the diameter of the gear lever? I was thinking of making a shift knob that screws on, so I would need to thread the gear lever. If anybody knows how to remove the gear lever too, that could be helpful for the manufacturing process.

Thanks everybody!

Welcome! That's a nice looking car.
I removed that piece of molding on my '97 855 last summer. I think you have to slide it forwards and then pull it off. I remember I broke one of the clips during removal. I used a little adhesive to hold it in place when I reinstalled it.

Spend some time at Sam's Pull a Part on Granite St in Worcester. I've gotten tons of parts for my 94 there. I've also learned quite a bit about how things come apart and go together. Cliff Street Garage is just down the street and they specialize in Volvos.
