See part 716
That's what you would have to go through. If I remember correctly another poster said you can not get anything through.

Living with one car is hectic.

Just got back from shopping. Axle seal from Volvo parts, 60 piece tap and die set, T-handle tap ratchet wrench, and a large set high speed steel drill from HFT. Pictures shortly.

I could go up to 1/2-13 coarse or 1/2-20 fine, but can not figure out what size hole for final size. Should the final hole before tap be 3/8" or 7/16".

Location and hand-held position would make it difficult to get it all straight. Would starting with 1/8" and increasing by 1/64 till the final hole ensure some accuracy?

It doesn't matter where the hole ends up. Aim for the center. We are pulling on the bolt so as long as its 1/4 in from the edge of the shaft you are fine.

Remember to tape up before drilling and tapping to avoid metal slag going into transmission.

Are you sure you don't have a neighbor who can weld. That's a 5 minute job with a flux core mig or stick.

The retaining circlip gets off to one side and it will not get into the beveled area of axle gear so it will compress and let axle slide out. The way I have pulled many out is to pry but not with excessive force. I would say the axle will come out with 20 pounds force applied on an 18 long pry bar when the clip is in the proper place. If it doesn't come out then, in this EXACT order, turn the axle 90 degrees, push in and the pry again. Repeat the turn-push-pry several times. The purpose is to get the circlip to slide down via gravity and allow you to pry it out if it falls into the correct place. Once you've pried too hard the clip can bend and then I'm not sure you'll get out without shearing the clip.

Insightful Jimmy.
My success with removing and installing axles on our 850 more than a years ago from Marty's was a good hands-on reference.

To your point Jimmy "Once you've pried too hard the clip can bend and then I'm not sure you'll get out without shearing the clip", are there indicators to help determine that the clip is not bend?

Last night after removing the seal, grabbing it with my fingers and wiggled the stud in and out. It has movement 1/32" and more.

many thanks!

No neighbor with welding. A friend with slide hammer says he would lend hand SAT.
Local Azone shows slide hammer for loan... http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Tools-Garage-and-Equipment/Slide-Hammer/_/N-25f1
The drilling is slow, cutting first hole with 5/32 to 1" deep.

My drill set and tap spec is following... for direct threading of slide hammer i need to drill hole larger than 1/2", that is 19/32 (see chart for steel column), and then tap size 5/8 - 18
