Both boots are torn on torn on my driver's side axle. I'm contemplating on getting a replacement and DIYing this job. Would I need to also replace this (http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-a ... -6843112-1) seal on the transmission?

I like to replace the seal when I pull an axle, unless I know it is relatively new.

You don't have to buy the Volvo brand to get quality on this part, it is just a rebranded SKF axle seal

Thanks Erik!

Can I assume that if I pull the seal that I will lose some fluid and by doing so it would be a good time to do a fluid change anyway?

I replaced the axle seals on my '97 855 GLT a couple months ago at ~165k miles. I was working on an slightly sloped driveway. I was surprised how much transmission fluid leaked out on the downhill side -- it was probably 1 liter. On the uphill side axle, very little or no fluid leaked out when I pulled the seal.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

The driver's side will loose fluid after axle is pulled.
My 2001 V70XC lost close to above 2qt in 24 hours while all 4 wheels were on jack-stand.
I will not rush to save, rather make it a simple D&F.
ps - I can not feel gear shifts up or down, only RPM reflects the change (@150K - this was 7th D&F in 2 years). Love it!

I was changing to my winter tires and it looks like I may be the exception to the rule, my drivers Inner Boot is leaking grease from a crack in the boot. Outer boot is fine. Volvo OEM axels, not sure if PO repalced boots. I used a syringe for Childrens Tylenol and squeezed in lots of lithium grease and then sealed it with RTV silicone sealant to buy some time. Heck, it might even last for a while as the inner joint doesn't flex much.

My local parts supplier is able to source the GKN outer boot for a 98 t5 (Part number 31256240) for only $20 but not the inner boot (PN 31256230). The Volvo dealer wants $59 for the inner boot; which might be worth it as I don't want to have to do this twice?

How is everyone's inner boot made by EMPI or Rein boot holding up?
Where are they made?

Not sure if the inner boot on the car now is GKN, I see Germany stamped on it. Could it be Rein? Maybe PO replaced it? Thanks

Is their any write up on it, I see that you briefly mention it in one post but has anyone took the measurements? Why would they sell a different boot for the inner?

Thanks
