1999 XC70 key doesn't go in ignition completely
New to me XC, the key doesn't go in all the way, the tumbler turns no problem and car starts up just fine. However, the key can be removed in any position. I can also start it with anything flat really as long as the key is nearby. I've read about some issues with the ignition switch but this sounds like a key tumbler issue right? If so, I suppose that's a dealer job in order to program the keys/immobilizer? I would leave it but I also can't lock my doors because it thinks there is a key in the ignition and keeps unlocking itself. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, that's the tumbler assembly.
The keys/car will NOT need to be reprogrammed if you order an ignition collar that fits your existing key (they will match it to your VIN number).

That sounds like great news, thanks. Is it a hard job to swap it out? I guess it's safe to assume that I will have to order that ignition collar at a dealer right?

Wow! I think it's safe to assume that if I can't find something here, I didn't look hard enough. Thanks a lot.

Just to close this off... I bought a barely used tumbler from cn90 and installed it with the same results, turns out the plunger in the center of the ignition switch was preventing the key from going in. I replaced the ignition switch and solved the issue. Sure glad I didn't spring for a new tumbler at the dealer $$$

I'm thinking these two problems are related somehow. Maybe the immobilizer ring is FUBAR or there is a bad connection in the plug?
