I guess this explains why I had such a hard time getting hold of the right lambda sensor and why it absolutely flies high up the rev range.

Uk market cars are usually 10v,more than in the rest of the world.
All 20V cars have 20v stamped on the valve cover.

Well, you'd better tell the Volvo, the DVLA, the insurance companies and the other people that own them that the XLT doesn't exist. I've owned two 10V 850s and yes there is only DOHC on the valve cover.
However the rules changed after '98 as both my 1999 and 2000 V70s I've owned simply say Volvo and they were B5254S and the newer B5244S. Both were Denso. Engine numbers on block also confirm this.
I don't believe that Volvo made any 10 valve engine with Denso. To my knowledge they were Siemens engine management.
Getting back to the OPs problem it's more than likely that if it's a white label (original) ETM and the wire is routed behind the starter the ETM will be due for replacement very shortly.

Yeah, I'm satisfied the ETM is the original as the manufacturing date of it is is from '98 and the wiring is still routed behind the starter motor. The car's done 152,000 miles.
It is vastly better since cleaning it.
