Re: 2002 XC70 Unveven Axle/Wheel Rotation after CV Joint Wor

Got the new axles from FCP. I feel like I should have kept the old OEM axles now that I know that the vibration was not caused by them. Well... The passenger side was spitting some grease although the axle looked new (with Volvo tags and all), and I thought the driver's side was making 'squeeky' sound.

I had quite a fight removing the driver side inner CV joint housing which forced me to drill and insert a bolt in order to get a good grip on. It was severely rusted, but came off with a slide hammer. In short, both axles are thrown away. Pictures here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 2&start=14

When the front wheels are jacked up and I rotate the tires back and forth, I don't hear THAT sound (squeeky) at all. I hear the basic transmission/axle 'glug glug' sound when going back and forth.

An interesting note:
I had all four tires replaced this afternoon. I can say that while there is still some noticable level of vibration during 'take off', it has been drastically reduced. I'm wondering what this tells me. Vibration coming from the hub now that the tires are truer than before?

"... I feel like I should have kept the old OEM axles now that I know that the vibration was not caused by them...."

Or could it be that one of the original axles AND its replacement are BOTH bad???

Several posts on Volvo Forums did raise concerns about the materiality of replacement axles.
I chose to rebuild a replacement set from a low mileage 2007.
No complaints thus far.

It is very, very possible! The passenger side axle (empire) from FCP was actually spitting grease just like the old one at the inner boot. I took it off and put one from Advanced--I just could not wait too long for another replacement. It is fine so far.

One other thing: I know for sure that the sway bar rubber bushings are shot. I'm now wondering what kind of effects they would have on vibration. I have to throw this out there...

And yet another thing: Would you think this amount of tire/wheel tilt (caster) be expected on right wheel fully turned/locked left for example (picture). I was expecting at least a perpendicular orientation of the tire in this case. I'm also trying to determine if bearings or ball joints are giving under load thus contributing to vibration.

I'm OK with the tilt on the left wheel lean with steering fully turned left for example.
