1979 245 Wire Routing Questions

Post by 18406ej »

Good Evening,

I am a newer member, and just jumped into the Volvo world as I am restoring my teen daughter's new '79 245 with Lambda Sond. I have looked for the answers to these questions via manuals and the Internet but have come up empty handed. I can read wiring diagrams to a degree, but have a hard time discerning the actual physical location of components listed on the diagrams.

Any responses and insight would be appreciated.

1) I just replaced the O2 sensor, and found that the old (single) sensor wire and its connector were just hanging down and unconnected. I attached the existing connector to the new sensor, and upon examining the wire harness running toward the computer I found a green wire that had the female connector for the sensor. I connected the wires, but I noted that the green wire appears to enter the passenger-side firewall via a rubber grommet.

Would this green wire be the proper connection point for the O2 sensor?

2) While installing new engine mounts I noticed a broken wire hanging down from the Positive terminal of the alternator. I found the other half of the wire connected to a sensor screwed into the engine block just above the alternator. I am assuming that this sensor is for the dashboard thermostat and not the temp sensor for the fuel system, as it only had a single male terminal.

If this is the dash temp sensor, why has my sensor (apparently) been working?

3) While giving the rest of the engine compartment wiring a quick look-over, I found a metal box (~2" by 4") mounted on the passenger-side fender directly ahead of the computer. There are wires coming from this box, but they have all been cut and then stuffed up behind the box. The box is marked as a Volvo part, but the rest of the label is unreadable.

What is this box, should these wires be connected, and if so, where would they route to?

I appreciate any time, energy and insight that you might provide. I very much enjoy the Forum, and all of the helpful information that you members have contributed.
