98 S70 T5 Rear brakes rubbing?

Post by Glencoeteen »

Hey everyone!
So i think my lack of sleep is keeping me from thinking clearly, but there is a rubbing sound coming from both rear brakes, I have removed the calipers and turned the rotors by hand and it sounds like its rubbing against the dust shield but i can not see where.
first that comes to mind is parking brake pads, i have adjusted them all the way in and even removed them completely with no change, is it possible for both rear hubs to be bent? my other thought was to remove the dust shield but i need to pull the hubs. to get the shield off...

Does sound like a dust shield(s) but here's a place to look if you haven't: When the drum is off, and you spin the hub, is it smooth and quiet (it should be, of course)? If the e-brake hardware is pushed out of place it can rub on the hub inside of the drum; I think it is the lower spring gets hung up.

hub spins great, no play or noise. only once i install the rotor does it make that obnoxious sound, i removed the ebrake pads, springs and spun the rotor still same sound, i think i will pull the hub, remove the dust shield and see if there is a difference

Could it be a bad wheel bearings? Unlikely since it is on both sides, but......

I spent 2 hours Wednesday searching for the source of the SAME EXACT sound you are hearing (probably).

It is the portion of the dust shield that the caliper mounts over - pry it back and forth while you spin the rotor. I got the noise to go away, but after putting everything back together, it came back. I gave up.

Mine only scrapes for a small arc of the full rotation, which made me think either the hub or the rotor was out-of-round. Hub is perfect (just replaced the wheel bearing on that side, too), and I couldn't feel any bumps on the rotor (not exactly a precision check, but the Zimmerman rotors only have 5k miles on 'em).

So, while driving there is a Shhhk ..... shhhk ..... shhhk. Annoying.
