Good to know it went together OK, but rough to hear of this problem.

Has it set any codes?

Check and post them if you don't have the necessary information.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you read the codes? I'm a recent owner of the Volvo and don't even have a manual yet.

Please post back and enlighten me, as I need to get back on the road!.

Thanks again,

Al

Sorry, I forgot you had just bought the car.

Behind the left front suspension turret you should find a box like this:

Image

It should have a cover over it but that just lifts up.

To test for fuel injection codes connect the selector cable to socket #2, turn ignition to ON but do not start the engine. Press the push button once for at least 1 second but no more than 3 seconds.
Watch the red LED and count the number of flashes in 3 flash series. Flash series are separated by 3 second intervals. Make a note of all codes displayed. If it flashes 1-1-1 it means no codes are stored and the fuel system is OK. It will only store a maximum of 3 series of codes.

To test for ignition codes use socket #6 and repeat the above.

To test for turbo codes use socket #5 and repeat the above.

Excellent Bill. Did I say I love the internet....

I had located that box. Now I know how to get the codes. I'll try and digest that, and go get them all.

I'll post them when I do. Is there a source for interpreting codes?

Anyway, thanks so much. The more I work on this car the more I'm liking it. Everything is accessible. It's like an old Ford or Chevy.

The codes are 1-1-1 for FI and Ignition.

There isn't a socket in #5. There was a socket in #3 that didn't register any blinks.

There is another box called B with one socket connect at #2. Nothing from it either.

Is there another way to code the turbo?

Thanks for that great tip, by the way.

Al

One question I should have asked at the start - have all vacuum pipes been re-connected correctly and are all the pipes in good condition? No kinks, worn parts or leaks of any sort?

The only way I know to check codes for the turbo is what I gave you. I can't understand why there is nothing at position 5, nor can I understand why you have box B. The only thing that comes to mind is someone has changed the diagnostic unit at some time.

The diagnostic box can be used for further checks - on the FI side it can check circuit breakers and some of the components in the FI system. On the ignition side it can test the impulse sender and the throttle switch. However, these checks are used mainly after repairs.

As for interpreting the codes, which you didn't have anyway, I have a full list which I shall post later as it is fairly long and I am running out of time tonight. If you had come up with a code I would have given you that now.

Well, now I'm in the process of checking the vacuum hoses. some look bad

One question. In the inside of the intake manifold, behind the injectors, are a series of vacuum hoses. There are 3 that are in line with each other horizontally. Then there is one off to the left between the other 3, all by itself.

It comes toward the injectors about 6 inches, then turns towards the firewall about 4 inches, and then turns down about an inch. It has what looks like a broken off plastic nipple in it, but I can't find anywhere it should be hooked up.

Would you know of any vacuum system diagram for the 740?

Thanks, Al.

As promised, here is Diagnostic Testing for 740s fitted with the self diagnostic box. This covers fuel injection and ignition only.

Be patient it takes some time to load.
