Coolant leak 850 glt 97

Post by Flea »

I've got a coolant leak. It's a slow one, and I keep the reserve tank full, when it gets low (usually about every 2 weeks). We found the leak, and tried to seal it, but it didnt take, now I know I need a new radiator, and was wondering is it easy to change them out ? I know it will be done right by my friend, who requires little in return, just trying to save some money really. But figured I'd try asking here on this forum, as I've found it very helpfull on other issues. Thanx..

yes could be done relatively easily in less than 2 hours ..unless you run into a problem (rusty nuts and bolts).

Make sure you have extra hoses while your there and change your thermostat if not done recently.

Sorry to sound naieve, but where is the thermostat, about how much more does that add to the cost of parts, and do you have to change it regardless? Should I check some of the sites you guys recommend, to find parts ? Or do I stick with what's in my area in MDR, Ca. ?
Thank you for your help !!

Follow the top hose from the radiator back to the engine. Where it comes to the engine is the thermostat housing. There will be a smaller hose to the expansion tank. Remove both hoses and the housing and find the thermostat.

Cost about $10.00. Make sure the kit contains a new O-ring.

Mail order is probably your best choice if price is your main concern.

Since you're in California, a good place might be Autohaus Arizona. They have Nissens and Behr radiators and I think shipping is free if you buy a certain amount from them. Plus, your order won't take as long as ordering from the east coast (FCP Groton or EEuroparts).

Their website is at: http://www.autohausaz.com/

Good idea is to get the new harder replacement bolts for the thermostat housing before you remove the old ones. The original ones have a habit of stripping. Beware.

Do you get the harder replacement bolts when you get the thermostat?
Or are those seperate ?
