If any air pump enthusiasts want to buy my old (working) one, let me know. I'd love to sell it cheap and get it out of my garage. I actually have a few 850 pumps plus one 98 x70 pump, all working just fine.

Well then, for all those model years where some cars shipped with air pumps and some without, probably an equal number shipped without - don't get tricked into buying one of those high-polluting SAS-less cars! Or any of the newer models, where the air pump has been completely eliminated.
I'm not making a jab at anyone about the air pumps, I truly have several and would be quite happy for them to go to someone who wants them. I thought the market had completely disappeared.

The addition of VVT on the later models helped eliminate the need for the secondary air injection system. It changes valve overlap at opportune times to speed warming of the catalytic converter.Or any of the newer models, where the air pump has been completely eliminated.

Learned something new.
1998 S70 GLT has air pump, but now has SAS delete mod using 90-cent Radio Shack diode.
I just got a 2005 XC90 2.5T, the newer model of 5-cylinder engines: no air pump as far as I can tell. Maybe I am wrong?

The new engine management systems are able to adjust valve timing at startup to help warm up the catalyst more quickly, eliminating the need for both EGR and the SAS pump.
I don't know if that one has 2 catalysts or not, but that is even more common now - a small one right by the exhaust manifold to get it quickly warmed up, and then another downstream.

Check this very thread, it is mentioned a few posts up: Air pumps were only installed by Volvo for a few years. Later years used timing to address some of the same emissions principles.
