Riddle me this one

Drove to the local shops the other day no problems until I restarted the car to go home, engine started and ran ok but the ABS and SRS lights came on and I had no other power whatsoever, blinkers, fans, windows, radio, nothing at all. it wouldnt go in anything other than a forward gear, drove home ok, changed gear no probs etc. but electrically nothing still worked, Turned it off and restarted it ok and it hasn't missed a beat since, have they got a main electrical relay for other things but the ignition system that maybe got stuck open or shut ???, or has anyone struck this before.

'93 10v 850 auto wagon is the beast in question.

Very strange....electrical glitches are some of the hardest things to problem-solve on these cars. Maybe a battery that is low and by you driving it home, charged it just enough to remedy the issues....that or poor connection to the wiring- often ground wires and/or positive battery post wiring could cause some strange things.

If it happens again, try wiggling the key a bit. I bet you'll find this to be your problem.

You need a new ignition key lock assy, they go bad and short out the entire car

+1 with the above folks. What they said.

You may want to check the condition of your battery terminals. If they are corroded they could do the same thing. I would clean them with baking soda and run some dilectric grease around the terminals for chits and giggles just to be safe.

Thanks for the replies people, I had a new key cut when I first got the car I'm using it at the moment and it's a lot tighter in the barrel, I'll persevere with that for while and give all the earth connections etc. a good once over, can't hurt, still working ok for now

JRL and others are right on... but it is actually the electrical part of the ignition switch that fails. This part is available seperately from the entire lock assembly, and can be fixed in situ by just dropping the panel... and with some patience you can remove and replace those screws that hold it on. Your new key won't fix your problem.

Thanks for that, I'll do some sniffing around to see if I can source a new one at the right price even if I don't fit it but keep it as a spare for the future as it seems ok for now.
