1996 850Turbo 200K Advice

Post by brad850 »

My 96 850 Turbo is about to cross the 200k threshold.
She already needs a blower motor and some suspension work.
What other investments should I prioritize at her big birthday?

She is a daily driver and stands up amazing well, and looks really good for her age.
Someone took care of her before I got her a couple years ago.

When is the last time the timing belt/water pump were done? Could be time.

Also, how about cleaning/replacing the PCV system? Definitely a good thing if you've never done it on the car!

With a 18 year old high mileage car I would look at items that could kill the car. What comes to mind is the cooling system pump and hoses, PCV, timing belt, oil lines and transmission fluid change. I think addressing these items you can easily punch out another 100K.

I am really not sure when the timing belt was done, like I said it is only two years with me. You are probably right, that the belt and pump combination should be done PCV, okay.
Thanks for the ideas

I thought about transmission fluid change, but I have heard stories of auto transmissions that stop working after a fluid change with high mileage, maybe that is urban myth. Yeah, the car breaker things make sense, I wonder how much it would be get all the lines.

Yeah, I love this car, how she feels on the road still, I would happily keep her another 100K

Thanks Kahl

if you don't know when a timing belt with a 70,000 mile change schedule was done, then it was done 70,001 miles ago

transmission fluid flushes as performed by auto mechanics can be hard on the transmission. a couple of drain-and-fill cycles is the preferred method and won't do any damage.

I have changed the fluid in my transmission 3 times (3 drains and fills each time, every 25,000 miles). The last was today.

Do you do your own work?

You should get it done asap! Water pump, tensioners, pulleys as well. The whole job.

For the PCV, also probably a good idea - if you see any oil leaked out around the fill cap and around the valve cover, it is a pretty good sign that the PCV is clogged.

I'd change both O2 sensors right away. A failing sensor can lead to a burned valve or a trashed catalytic converter -- neither of which are cheap fixes, especially if you don't do a lot of your own work. They are maintenance items at 100K miles.

Sounds like I am running up quite a bill with this stuff.
Especially since I would not be doing much of it myself.

I guess it will be prioritized a bit each month.
