2008 XC90 Angle Gear and Rear Diff fluid change

Post by bguzz »

I plan on replacing the Angle Gear and Rear Diff fluid on my 08 XC90. I'll be using the Volvo Rear Diff fluid (1161620) and Redline 75W90 API GL5 for the Angle Gear.

Any tips on sucking the fluid out and replacing it? I know neither has a drain plug, but for refill, do you fill until it starts coming out the fill plug?

Also, would buying 1 Liter of fluid for each be enough? I haven't seen anything that states the capacity of the fluids.

I am doing it now as we speak, tons of photos coming.
Lots of little tricks, so hold off if you can. I will post the DIY this weekend.
This is not a job for the faint of heart, however, I will post some photos so the faint-of-heart people can do it...lol!!!

FYI, I use Redline 75W90 for both angle gear and rear diff.

The AOC uses Volvo fluid $18/1L.

I'll hold off for your tips/picks...THANKS!!!! AOC is the Haldex thing? is that separate from the Angle gear and does it need to be replaced/maintained?

I thought the rear diff needed 75W90 with an added friction modifier so you couldn't use it as is...that's why I was looking at the Volvo fluid.

The Haldex AOC filter was black at 82K, not bad but time to be replaced.

Rear Diff: I have Redline 75W90 in my BMW for years and years, zero issues. Many people use Redline 75W90 in their Volvo Rear Diff too.
