2004 XC 90 Fuel Filter Leaking???

Post by jbarrow8081 »

Hello Forum,

I have a '94 XC 90 with about 112,000 miles. The other day I started to notice the smell of fuel and think I have spotted a leak. I am not too well versed when it comes to cars but very much appreciate the advice of all those on this forum. I think I have found the source of the leak and want to confirm that it is indeed my fuel filter.

Attached are two pictures. The first is from the right side/passenger of the car just in front of the right rear wheel. The second picture is at the same spot and its me under the car looking up at the under carriage. I have put a circle around two droplets of fuel on what I think is the bracket around my fuel filter.

Can someone please confirm that this is the fuel filter? Secondly, would a leak here be more commonly found in the couplers on one side or the other of the filter or the filter itself?

Thanks as always for any help or advice that is provided. It's greatly appreciated.

Joe

You need to take care of this ASAP!!!

1. Wipe it clean and start looking.
First place to look is FUEL PUMP, the Fuel Pump COVER can crack. Under 10y/150K recall warranty:

2. Then replace the Fuel Filter, which might have corroded through the metal casing (just a guess).
I wrote a DIY for Fuel Filter, very easy to do, just look at the DIY below.
Make sure you buy the correct filter for your car:

Thanks so much for the information. I did end up getting a new filter today and replaced it. Per your DIY and some other research it took all of 15 minutes to do. The old filter was very corroded so that hopefully is the root cause. It has the tape on the couplers so I am guessing it was the original or darn near close to it. I will continue to monitor and my next effort will be the pump and cover as you noted above.

Thanks so much for the help cn90!
