Did you guys get it right your first try? I just ruined my first roll of new material when I had to rip it back off because it was crooked on the board and a lot of spots weren't sticking down properly.

A lot of discussion here about the adhesive sprays; any advice and tips on the actual application of the spray and the new material? I'll salvage whatever material I can and use it on the sunroof shade board but I want the next roll of fabric to be my last. lol

Well I never did the sunroof, but I guess it just worked on the first try. Put a lot of the good adhesive down and overlaid the outsides then but to fit. Some parts I wasn't happy with, but I just dealt with it. It seemed to stick real well.

I found these 2 videos to be pretty helpful:

Cinematography aside, they explain how to bind the fabric to the headliner board.

I'm getting another roll of fabric tomorrow and hopefully things will go better this time.

northernlights wrote: Using a small trim paint roller seems to be the best way to apply the headliner into the corners/curves. I put the clean board out on a piece of plywood on two sawhorses, laid out the material on top, and then folded it at the mid point so that I could apply the adhesive to one half of the clean board while rolling out the new material. After I finished the back half, I folded the fabric the other way and did the front half. All trimming was after the foam bonded, and I took some pictures of the old board to remind myself how much overlap the factory used in different places. The first photo below is the old board.
This looks suspiciously similar (minus the paint roller) to the videos which you posted.

My advice would be to have someone help with the attachment phase (my gf really saved me here) and to fold the fabric in half long ways. If I ever have to do it again I'm going to try it that way. Folding it longways should allow the fabric to settle into the contours of the board better (I think).

Stressful project but certainly doable.

This repair is approaching fast, fabric sags 1 sq/in each day over passengers' head. But not visible in rear view mirror.

What was your cost of materials for headlining repair.
Cost of unexpected such as broken clips, trim piece degraded, your knee causing damage to the seat, other?

Never again M?

I can imagine. Both of my sedans have been temp. patched, and it is obvious if you look up.

3M has a good contact spray for carpeting applications that I have recently used on an unrelated project.
I would consider that as an adhesive if I cared to do the tedious removal of the headliner.

On the T-5R I had recently acquired, the previous owner had used button screws to re-attach the liner to the panel and foam. It looks good for the quick fix. It appears as the upholstery design.

4 yards of material from JoAnn Fabrics was about $40.
The adhesive spray I believe was in the $5 to $10 dollar range.

I had no issue with broken fasteners or cracking plastic. No damage to seats or any other unexpected issues.

I got it on my first try, but I think that's because I checked out a couple you tube videos and folded the material in half front to back (wagon) for application, and had a nice big table outdoors to lay the liner board down on for adhesion of the material.
