No third gear can be the result of removing the band anchor bolt thinking it is the fill plug. The disptick hides behind the lower rad hose and a lot of quick lube places and a few owners have removed the bolt in error. When the special bolt that is on top of trans more or less below end of brake master cylinder, is removed the band slips and now the B4 servo can't close the band to stop the drum to accomplish the 3rd gear shift.

There is a way to recapture the 3rd gear band anchor but first you should determine if this is the case.
Remove the B4 servo cover and B4 piston located just above the left hand wheel and poke a philips screwdriver through the hole at the end of the bore. If you feel a spring loaded action against you for about 8mm then the screwdriver stops the band anchor is in place. In this case the friction material on the band anchor may be worn past limits or there is a fault in the valve body.

If not search Volvospeed for "band anchor recapture"

Leave the B4 piston and cover removed during the recapturing process as it allows another 3-4mm of clockwise rotation of the band anchor and makes it easier to capture.

Replacement of B4 servo (cover) has not been known to restore 3rd gear unless the B4 bore has damage in which case it will need machining and a new B4 servo aquired....actually this isn't possible as it's not separately listed in the parts breakup.

The B4 servo cover restores proper timing of 2nd to 3rd gear changes where flares are apparent. It won't fix a missing 3rd gear. Neither will a fluid change or valve body refurbishment in my experience.

I'm grappling with the same problem on a 2002 XC70 and have already rebuilt the valve body (twice) as well as new fluid. I devised a test pushrod marked at 85mm to test for band anchor wear. Mine is there but friction material is not!!

To complete this thread I replaced the 3rd gear friction band on my own 2002 XC70 and we've been driving it for nearly 3 years.

2kenworths did you recover 3rd gear on that car?
