2005 XC90 2.5T Serpentine Belt question

Post by cn90 »

I browsed different websites, Volvo dealer and autohausaz, rmeuropean, eeuroparts etc. and get different answers for the 2005 XC90 2.5T Serpentine Belt!

Some websites say the difference is with and without AC, but as far as I am concerned, all of these cars have AC.

The Serpentine Belt options:

Volvo 30731811 = 6DPK1825

Volvo 30731808 = 6DPK1841

Any Serpentine Belt guru here?

I think I found the answer. It is the PS Pump Pulley design change.
2005 is the transition year for 2.5T engine layout.

2004 ---> some 2005: PS Pump PN is 8251738
Some 2005 ---> 2006: PS Pump PN is 36002540, which has a smaller pulley diameter ---> slightly shorter serpentine belt.

I use Vida for any parts lookups on later cars. It has VIN specific ranges for different parts and narrows down things perfectly. Then I use a dealer search function once I have a number.

Thanks Mike,

I use VIDA too, but my curiosity kicks in and I want to know why the difference. It is only of academic interest lol...

They did the same thing bw '99 and '00 V70s & S70s as well. They increased the PS pulley diameter and shortened the belt. I think they were attempting to get more steering feel from the lifeless newer system.

By making it smaller for the XC90 they were probably making it lighter.

I'm driving a 2004 XC90 at the moment and coincidentally to this thread had to avoid the classic driver door swinging open in front of me at about 35-40kph yesterday. The car's steering loaded up heavily with the quick change of direction and I had to fight the wheel to avoid over correcting. That was one close call but the car's ABS kicked in and it was on new Pirelli Scorpions.
