2001 V70 XC - Brake Booster Question

Post by dbm123 »

My wife's V70 XC has started making a high pitched whistling when letting off the brakes. I am told it is the brake booster. Very expensive part from what I can see. Since my wife's car is a XC, I assume that it has the dynamic traction control.... is that a reason assumption? Also, how difficult is this thing to change out?

I had this conversation some time back. One respondent said he thinks that the difference in boosters is determined by whether your car has DSTC or not:

I still haven't fixed it as the noise comes and goes in spells. My base model V70 does NOT have DSTC, but your XC probably does?? As I recall from looking into this previously, the version that the parts houses refer to as "traction control" will have an electrical connection on the front of it.

I haven't replaced it yet but I was looking at the stupid thing and it appears that a few things need to be removed out of the way in order to extract the booster. It's kind of hidden up under the cowl. There will most likely be four nuts that will have to be removed from up under the dash - I'm looking forward to that task.

BTW - do you hear the the vacuum pump buzzing a lot when you shut the engine off?

600 USD part. Ouch. I would have a good look at all the seals before I replaced it.

Whistling? Problematic booster usually is a hissing sound. Check vacuum pump and all the hoses first.

It would be unlikely for the car to have DSTC but the 5 wire connector at about 2 o'clock as it is mounted in the car looking at the face of the booster will tell you if it does. A 2001 would have DSTC switch in bottom row on climate panel also.
