1995 850 GLE Engine specification

Post by felorachart »

I am a new owner of a 1995 850 GLE bought used in Canada.

According to the VIN it has a B5252S engine with DOHC 20 V

I have surfed the internet and only found specs on such engines with a SOHC 10V.

I'm confused. Does anybody understand this?
According to Volvo World, Canada imported the B5252S engine on the 93-97 850's. see http://www.vlvworld.com/indexframe.html?engspecs.html

I'm checking on tune up specs.

any info would be appreciated.

p.s. this is my second Volvo. I bought one on the overseas program in 1966 when I went to Europe to travel and work for a year. I brought it back and eventually sold it. I'm grateful to be back in the Volvo family.

All B5252S are 10 valve (final 2 of 5252 indicates 2 valves per cylinder)

The B5252S engines for Canada were all SOHC for fuel economy.

thank you all for your replies.

It looks like I do have a 5252s engine with DOHC. Still a bit confused.

I take it to a dealer service department next week (many hours away).

If I find out any other info I'll let you know. It's confusing because it seems

there are models in Canada that weren't imported into the States (not sure

about Europe).

I do not think they had the manual 5-SPD imported into the US either.

Ozbricks forum has an item from the book published by Volvo "The Volvo 850 Story" it gives all the engine specs, doesn't mention SOHC just DOHC so don't know where that one came from, I actually have a copy of that book, I'll do some checking up and post it.

B5252 - 850, S/V 70
Configuration: DOHC Inline 5-cylinder
Displacement: 2.435 liters
SAE Net Output: 140 Bhp - 144 Bhp
Notes: 2 Valve per cylinder variant of B5254 engine.
according to http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/Volvo_Books/engine2.html

i have a B5202 bwt

Edit:
I don't really care either way, I just thought felorachart would like to know. Also the 's' is missing here, so maybe it's wrong after all.
But one look at the engine cover should be enough to know ;)

This has really started a discussion, hasn't it?

The link provided by felorachart to Volvoworld gives the following:
B5252 Description
Available in Canada from 1993 to 1997 in the 850 Base Model
It is a low power engine for fuel economy and simplicity
2.4 liters
5 cylinders
Single Overhead camshaft
2 valves per cylinder, 10 valves total
Firing order 1-2-4-5-3, number 1 piston on the timing belt side
Oil capacity with filter: 6.1 quarts
Volvo Cars US do not mention a B5252 at all, but as it was designed for the Canadian market probably weren't interested.

I look forward to the result of the visit to the dealer.
